In June 2011, Univocal Publishing was founded by Jason Wagner and Drew Burk as an independent publishing house specializing in artisanal editions and translations of texts spanning the areas of cultural theory, media archeology, continental philosophy, aesthetics, anthropology, and more. Univocal’s books combine traditional printmaking techniques with the creative evolutions of the digital age and featured letterpress covers designed by publisher and proprietor Jason Wagner, who also provided funding for Univocal. Gina Newman, Univocal's production manager, oversaw the printing and binding of the books from 2012-2017.

In 2017, Univocal ceased operations as an independent publishing house and transitioned its titles to its publishing partner, the University of Minnesota Press. Univocal books that have already been published will continue to be available as a series with Minnesota. In addition, Minnesota will be publishing 21 forthcoming titles that will be known as “A Univocal Book.” Univocal’s director, Drew Burk, will work with Minnesota for the remaining 21 titles as a consulting editor. Publisher Jason Wagner is moving on to pursue other projects.
